I have long believed in TERM LIMITS for elected officials. I would like to work towards terms limits for the position of county commissioner to no more than 2 terms. We need new faces, new perspectives on the board to better serve our county with wiser, more efficient, and more transparent managing of the taxpayers' funds. Our taxpayers deserve no less! Additionally, I wish it to be known that I will never receive a PER DIEM payment for any meeting, anywhere, at any time if I am fortunate enough to be elected as the 3rd District Steele Co. Commissioner. Lastly, I will work as hard at being a commissioner as I have done during the past 40 years being a real estate appraiser. Those of you who know me in either a business capacity or on a personal basis, you know that I like to work; I like to work hard, and I enjoy working. It's in my DNA ! It is who I am.
I came to Owatonna in 1970 and began purchasing investment residential properties in 1971. I have remodeled over 50 homes and 7 commercial properties during my 46 years in this town. Owatonna has been good to me; and I have seen a lot of changes in that time. My wife and I have lived in our Victorian 2-story home on the corner of S. Cedar Ave and W. Rice St. since 1976. We have 3 grandchildren who are the joy of our lives.
My wife, Debbie, and I began GNEMI APPRAISAL SERVICE in 1977; and we have serviced 7 counties primarily in SE Minnesota (Steele, Waseca, Rice, Dodge, Freeborn, Mower & Le Sueur) and occasionally Goodhue, Blue Earth, Olmsted and some of the southern suburbs of Minneapolis over the past 39 years. I am a licensed CERTIFIED GENERAL REAL PROPERTY APPRAISER since licensure began in 1989 in Minnesota for real estate appraisers. In addition to residential properties, I appraise agricultural farm land, commercial and industrial properties and have performed thousands of home appraisals and several hundred farms and commercial properties.
During the past 4 years, I have received numerous phone calls and visited with a variety of homeowners, farmers, and business owners throughout Steele Co. in the capacity of a real estate appraiser. One question I have been asked on several occasions is why are the real estate taxes in Steele Co. so disproportionately higher than surroundings counties? It's a question that deserves an answer.
If elected as the 3rd District Steele Co. Commissioner, I will not only work for each individual in that district but for all residents in Steele County. Whether you own property or not, tax rates affect you. With increased unnecessary county government spending, it is possible rents for both residential and commercial tenants will continue to increase. My purpose for running for this position is to insure our county budget is run as efficiently as possible and to be available, approachable and engaged with the residents of Steele County for all of their needs. My focus would be to assist our county board of commissioners in getting our tax rates at a manageable and affordable level for all Steele County residents while at the same time consistently and competently reviewing, analyzing and making necessary changes to the county budget to keep the spending in line and under control to better serve all of Steele County.
